Y'know, with a name like Spike Spiegel, I wouldn't necessarily assume he's of Asian extraction. Of course, he speaks Japanese, but everyone does in the future. Even the Native American shamans.

I really really want to hate this casting choice.

But...when you think about it, if he can show just a little bit more emotion than he does in basically every other movie* he actually can probably hit the part pretty well.

...except well, Christian Bale would do the part infinitely better.

Spike is quiet and (usually) not very emotional, but I'd say he's more complex & subtle than Keanu can muster. Really it depends on what kind of 'episode' they're going to turn into a film. Straight up action, Keanu can probably do fine. But Cowboy Bebop occasionally aspired to much more, and succeeded. I have my doubts whether Keanu can match it.
