This morning, there was a crow hopping around our backyard with a broken wing. I suspect that the evil foliage in the backyard tried to capture and eat him. Are you still outraged by our herbicide, Toren? I called animal control and a guy came and lassoed our new-found friend and took him away. Which reminds me... Why is a raven like a writing desk? (*)

Going back a few days, for Miskatonic Day, I created a little architectural detail.

Rebecca miraculously cured one of our sprinklers of its incontinent ways. And she also picked out a little medicine cabinet-y type thing for the bathroom. I was a little unsure of how well our wall was going to hold it, especially as the studfinder was behaving with such irreproducible results that I believe the studs in the wall must be S shaped. We never did manage to find any studs, but the wall appears to be content with the addition, as long as no one attempts any chin-ups on it.

Watched a bit of Penn & Teller's BULLSHIT. It's not telling me anything I didn't know, but it's terribly refreshing to hear James van Praagh be called a motherfucker. It was a little strange seeing James Underdown of the Center for Inquiry-West there. I've met him, and actually helped to create and name the Independent Investigations Group. Some of you young Catholic wenches may recall going to see/test an aura reader... my best memory being future-axe-murderess Julie being told that she would be a kindergarten teacher, or something like that. Anyway, suddenly the IIG mutated into this thing where you had to take classes (costing $) to stay in as 'investigators' and I jetted out rapidly. That also counts as BULLSHIT in my book. If they don't want the free expertise of someone with an advanced degree in physics, then fuck 'em.

Saw The Devil's Backbone last night. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Hellboy was teh suck, but I can still dream that del Toro will make something excellent out of At the Mountains of Madness. My Spanish is just good/bad enough that I thought that the title 'El espinazo del diablo' is quite close to The Devil's Spinach.

Okay, I'm gonna list a few pieces of crap on Ebay now.

(*) Poe wrote on both, of course.

I cured TWO incontinent sprinklers this weekend, stuccoed a crack in the wall, chopped back our hedge because it was going crazy again, mowed the lawn (front and back), miracle growed (miracle grew?) the plants, chainsawed a branch of the small ugly cypressy thing in the front, and did 3 loads of laundry. Damn house ownership--it's cramping my style. And three trips to home depot didn't add to the joy. The first two were pretty fast--it was the last trip on which I had to return the original little cabinet for the bathroom and get a replacement (because it was broken straight out of the box) and the replacement was 30 feet up on a pallet, and it took the home depot employee easily half an hour to find a ladder and get it for me that really deepened my hatred for HD. So far we're 2 for 3 on pieces of furniture bought there that turned out to be defective when we got them home.

Devil's Backbone is a great movie.

And Bullshit is a great series. Did you see this week's one where they trashed christianity?

We only have basic cable, so it'll take a while for us to see them tackle Christianity. But I liked what they had to say about the people who are 'selling' the Apocalypse, "Sure, it's just Christians scamming money off of other Christians, but that still doesn't make it right."

Really? They can use the word bullshit on basic cable? No kidding! And Penn has such a potty mouth, too!

Dunno if you're interested, but it's on dvd now, the first season. Dunno if the series you're watching is edited or bleeped in any way

er, no. I mean we have basic cable, so we don't get the show at all, but we did get the DVD from Netflix.

If it were my back yard, coyotes would have the run of it so the crow would be eaten, in the natural order of things. Also, untended babies. So yes, I am still outraged with the wholesale slaughter of foilage and also simply by the definition of the word "weed" though that has nothing to do with you. Anyway - at least you nerds are getting exercise and for that I thank the baby Jesus.

I thought "The Devil's Backbone" was well done, but really, it was just a "Tales from the Crypt" episode. I didn't think it warranted a full feature. But it looked great.

"Hellboy" wasn't too bad, especially Ron Perlman who is a great character actor, and I'm glad to see him get a leading roll.

SHAMELESS PLUG:

I am going to be interviewing Guillermo del Toro for CultCuts magazine when he gets back from Cannes.

Hellboy was wretched, except for the first ten minutes. Ron is definitely one of my favorite actors, from Name of the Rose to City of Lost Children to The Last Supper.

Fantastic! I mailed him a copy of "Ogdru Jahad" when he was making Hellboy - obviously it wasn't used. Ask him if he'd use "Shoggoths Away" in ATMOM!

I wasn't thrilled with Hellboy's plot, but I fell in love with Hellboy himself. My perfect man! ;) The CGI was the shit, though. It makes I Robot look pathetic. And I loved The Devil's Backbone! The imagery of the bomb in the courtyard still haunts me.

I don't think Mountains of Madness is going to be very good. Just a hunch. Guillermo is hit and miss. He's definitely better with his own material than with someone else's.

Shawn was viciously attacked by a cabinet in his mother's bathroom a couple of weeks ago -- and, no, he wasn't attempting pull-ups.

Just a warning.
