Skeptical Inquirer has a nice review of the history of detectives, and one of the interesting details is the story of Kate Warne, who not only became the first female detective in the US in 1856(!) but was also centrally involved in uncovering a plot to assassinate President Lincoln.

Is that available in bookstores?

I've seen SI in bookstores. If your interest is Kate Warne, the wiki page has a lot more information.

SI is also available in digital formats.

More 19th century detectives generally - I have a vague understsnding that they tended to handle divorces for middle-class people, but that's all I know.
