Well, maybe you can find a used one cheap and swap the drive over to it. I've been doing similar stuff with Samsung 214T monitors -- my favorite computer monitor -- buying some cheap for parts and Frankensteining them.

Apparently, the PS3 encrypts data on the hard drive, so you can't swap them (without reformatting). Next step appears to be this.
