The first of six novels (so far) about a wily veteran working as a hired blade who buckles some swash in Golden Age Spain. Pérez-Reverte does a nice job recreating the history and poetry of the milieu, while still wallowing in the part-literal part-metaphorical gutter with assassins, taverns, Inquisitors, and the Spanish Match. A quick read, but enjoyable stuff. And check this out:
The series started as Pérez-Reverte was disappointed with the lack of treatment of the history of the Spanish Golden Age in the school textbook of his teenaged daughter Carlota. He commissioned Carlota to gather documentation for him (hence, she is billed as co-author of the first novel [not in the US]) and developed the stories.

Perez-Reverte is awesome. I am sad that Hollywood found it necessary to excise the Dumas LARPers from The Ninth Gate; they were the best part.
