Billy Graham's Evangelistic Association Rocked the Fort at Fort Bragg last year. Google Cache, since BGEA assures us this page doesn't exist.

The Army shelled out $54,000 to promote and support the event. This caused a few malcontents to complain. As the first comment there notes:

"As to the negative information and concerns about it being held on post, the military is constantly hosting events in support of many different initiatives of all faiths, ethnicities and celebrations of life. This was just another show of support of the diversity of our military."

So one SGT Justin Griffith organized Rock Beyond Belief, lining up speakers from the Friendly Atheist to Richard Dawkins. In his request, he hewed closely to the model provided by Rock the Fort, asking for about $42,000.

In this time of national budgetary crisis, the garrison commander countered with $nada, along with requirements to disclaim any official sponsorship of the event (unlike the BGEA event).

Just another show of support of the diversity of our military!

Y'know, maybe the attendance would have been smaller, so less money might be reasonable. But the disclaimer provision is just plain ugly.

According to the commander, "That money came from an account known as the Chaplain Tithes and Offering Fund. It's tithe money given by churchgoers on post, not taxpayer money, Sicinski said. Each religion has a separate sub-account. For example, he said, no money from the Buddhist or Wiccan tithe accounts went toward Rock the Fort."

If true, that changes the money situation a lot.
