One other important detail: "When there was no reply at the door she enlisted the help of neighbour Michelle Grant and they saw Miss Paginton through the curtains, lying on her bed with her cat lying on her chest."

I suspect foul play. The cat stole her breath, and then tried to make it look accidental.

I must respectfully offer another possibility: In keeping with my theory that cats are natural physicians (with a preference for all-natural acupuncture and surgery), the cat may have been attempting a very slow form of CPR. (I've never said all cats are *competent* physicians...)
