stevenkaye tipped me off to Jean Lisette Aroeste, one of four ST:TOS writers with no prior television writing credits. At the time, she was a Star Trek Fan and UCLA librarian.
She was also "co-editor of the Directory of scholarly and research publishing opportunities: a guide to academic publishing opportunities in the humanities, social sciences, and science and technology (1971)"
Also in that august company is David Gerrold, who wrote "The Trouble With Tribbles" in college and went on to a fairly successful SF writing career. When H.A.R.L.I.E. Was One is an old favorite of mine.
Gerrold is a nice guy - he's come to a couple of the science fiction club meetings. I needled him about finishing the Chtorr series. That was probably 15 years ago, and book 5 still hasn't come out.
