I just got word from mom that my great-uncle Fred's WWII memoirs are now part of the Veteran's History Project. I actually have a copy at home, but it looks very nice on the website, and there are period photos, too, of Fred, Aunt Lauretta, and many of the Dutch underground members that gave Fred shelter and helped him evade the Nazis for months after his Liberator was shot down in 1944. Fred may not be the best writer, but he's got pretty good material to work with.

While I'm here, I'll give a shout out to Grampa (WWII), Dad and Uncle Rick (Vietnam).

Woo-hoo! And I'll give shout-outs to my dad (Coast Guard), uncle (Air Force), brother (Air Force), nephew (Navy), and nephew-in-law (Marines). Not that any of them ever saw combat. Technically, my uncle was serving during the Vietnam war but got a cushy assignment in Holland, where he met his wife. Does that make her a war bride?

Well, this isn't Veteran's day, but still. I think the next time I go home I'm going to wear a wire. If I ask my dad to write down his stories (or those of his brothers') he'll whine that no one's interested. If I offer to just bring in a recording device he'll get cranky and end the conversation.

But if we just get going he'll talk my (or any anyone else's) ear off about getting inducted, his curiousity nearly killing many times, at the same time of making friends of one of the Navaho code talkers, an Apache that went ear-hunting, the Japanese sharpshooter who had been handcuffed to his bird's nest in a palm tree...etc. There has got to be a way to save this.
