We went for a hike/explore at Kenneth Hahn State Recreational Area. I suppose it's about time we visited it, since it's practically in our backyard. The park has a lot of pretty nice picnic areas and other facilities scattered about (Who knew you could fish for trout and catfish? Not I.) and if you delve a bit further, you can escape the city altogether (apart from the hum of the nearby oil refinery.) A bit hazy for good views, but you can check out some photos.

There is a beautiful field that is the site of the former Baldwin Hills Dam and Reservoir, which broke in 1963, killing 5 and destroying hundreds of homes. More Baldwin Hillsyness from LAist.

And there's this mansion thing off in the oilfields. Anyone know what it is? It seems smack in the middle of the off-limits oilfield land, but it also seems to be well-maintained. Here's an overhead pic (I think). See my pics for a more typical view.

I've only been once, but it's an awesome place. do I remember that you're a Buffy fan? because they shot "I'm Under Your Spell" there. :)

Interesting note regarding the fishing: they will not post when the ponds have been restocked... however, you can call them if you're thinking of going up there and they will tell you if they have been restocked recently.

Also, they close rather early, so it's going to be morning/day fishing, no evening/night fishing. It goes without saying you'll need to purchase your fishing license before going up there.

I've taken Emily there and we had a great time. It's a little surreal, sitting there in the middle of LA and oil fields.

Working on your question.

So far all I've gotten is "I think some people live there, but I wouldn't call it a mansion." Evidentially there might be a few houses there, so I had to be more specific, so I sent your link. We'll see what comes of it.
