By way of Anna Quindlen, I am informed of some ancient Roman references to 'gay marriage'. Surely, they are comedic or satiric, but interesting nonetheless, like this bit of Juvenal:

A: Tomorrow at dawn I've an obligation to perform in the Quirinal Valley.
B: What's the occasion?
A: No need to ask; a male friend takes a husband and invites a few guests.

If we live long enough, this will happen, and happen openly; they will even want it reported in the city gazette.

Fascinating article.

Of course, as the author notes, it's quite dangerous to draw too many parallels between Roman culture an our own. The "traditional" definition of marriage has changed countless times over the centuries. And the Romans had some, well, peculiar definitions of homosexuality by today's standards...
