Dutton's is going, and now the word is that Acres of Books is on its way out. Now, I'll cop to the fact that in my many visits to the million plus books at Acres of Books, I think I've only come away with one pathetic book lauding the importance of the Great Pyramid in evaluating human history. Nevertheless, it is another icon of used book-dom in the greater LA area, and its passing leaves the number of options... at a ridiculously small number. The Change of Hobbit, Dangerous Visions, Flights of Fantasy, Paperback Trader, Hunter's Books... all receding in the mists of time. Like tears in rain. Time to die.

Used or new, independent bookstores are fewer and further between all the time. It's a damn disgrace. I go to the big Bookmarts to read and loiter; I spend my money at places like Vroman's or even online (no, *not* Amazon -- that's no different than the soulless giant book outlets). I'm sure there are many who would tell me my individual spending choices mean nothing at all in the larger scheme of things, and they may fuck themselves publicly and profanely. I want independent bookstores and I'll put up my pittance to help...
