I remember when I told my mom I didn't believe in god as a college freshman... she was very upset, and said "Next thing you're going to tell me is that you worship Satan too..."

I don't think she was too pleased with my response of "Actually, I don't believe in him either."

She still got me stuff for christmas though ;)

I think it's real, I've seen family interactions similar to this. Thing is, I think the kid is using atheism as the main tactic in the teenage rebellion. Hopefully, he'll grow up and become an atheist because it makes the most sense, not because it pisses his mom off the most.
