As usual, they're trying to keep the black man down. There was some sort of Brazil-esque computerized thingummy that clamped like a facehugger over the ballot box. And it was evidently on the fritz. So we stuck our ballots in a manila envelope held by an 'honest-looking' man. No doubt they'll wind up in the trash. I mean, if [livejournal.com profile] rizwank can be a poll-worker, what's the world coming to?

No really, I applaud all the volunteers and the people who open up their homes and shops to be polling places.

I'll explain the computerized thing, and my problems with it after 9:30pm.

As for allowing me to do it, I'll have you know that I brought the median age down by 20 years. And you old people are just too easily confused with the complexities of modern voting! *smile*

Get off my lawn!

And turn down that godawful noise, for Pete's sake!

You just don't understand...

You know what we're doing on your lawn? We're 'role-playing.' Its this brand new system of improv and theatrics --- does it blow your mind? Is it too heavy for you?

For that matter, are the subtle intonations of Beck too much for you? He doesn't use the same instruments from song to song! I bet that just makes you mad!

Whatever do you mean? Jeff Beck is one of the premier blues/rock guitarists of the 20th century. He held his own with Page and Clapton.

The Computers...

So, the voting machines were there just to check for over-votes (multiple votes for the same issue). The problem is that NVCs (multiple precincts in one location) didn't get one machine per, meaning that we had to hand sort 1000 ballots at the end of the night. Not fun.

The bigger issue though is that we had to run a tape to issue a zero count ... and the resulting ticket pretty much proved that the boxes were tracking votes (despite us being told that they were just there to avoid over-votes.) I suspect that the machines were used to provide initial counts --- I hope. Provisional ballots didn't go through the system, and I'm pretty sure some forgetful poll workers just ignored the computer and places the ballots directly into the box.

I've got a copy of the HBO Hacking Democracy documentary on the net if you'd like to see it, btw. Drop me a line.

I almost started sniffing around the computer to look for obvious security flaws, but, as was noted by Graydon, I'm on enough security watch lists, already.
