In related news, we succeeded in our mission to grill at least once per calendar month in 2008. An after-work evening in the middle of December added to the difficulty level. While we stood around the fire, I believe the mercury plummeted past an arctic 60 degrees. One of the things that struck me in the later letters was how staunch a materialist Jefferson was. And yet religious. Religious materialism seems curious today, since the existence of the spiritual seems to go hand in hand with religion.
