Casino Royale is the first James Bond novel. Perfectly fine, and Bond is pretty much Bond-of-the-novels from the get-go, though I think you can tell at times that Fleming is still feeling his way.

When you've finished Fleming, try "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" by le Carre.
