Microsoft I can understand.
But what Adobe program could you possibly be using that repaginates?
Acrobat? It's not Acrobat's fault.

If you say so, I'll gladly believe it's not Acrobat's fault. Certainly the little self-important message that flashed on the screen over and over again was "Word is now maliciously repaginating your document."

I don't know if this will help, but if I remember correctly, one of the more annoying "features" of Word is that page layout details (like printable margins) are dependent on the current active printer driver. So, if you change printer drivers (like, for example, changing from your default printer to the Acrobat driver), Word goes, "oh, you've changed printers. I will now repaginate based on the new driver info." It's like they purposely set out to fuck over anyone who's trying to do desktop publishing.

To solve this problem, try making Distiller your default printer, then get the document set up the way you want, and it shouldn't change when you print it then.

Gah! I didn't want to get into the details, but doing as you suggest was not enough. Even after I selected Adobe as the printer and redid all the widows and orphans, hitting the print button gave me a 15-minute nap followed by a document with some page breaks in the wrong place.

Drat! Well, if it's still not working I have one more brainstorm to try: print to file (either under the Acrobat driver or your standard one, although I'd try the Acrobat one first) and then drop that resulting file into the standalone version of Distiller.

By the way, Microsoft called. They said to tell you they're very sorry that they're a bunch of pigfuckers.

I don't know about you, but I have always had issues with Adobe Acrobat when I try to convert a large Word Doc into a PDF - especially if it has pictures and/or tables. I have found though that Scansoft's PDF creator 3 Professional Ed works like a charm. You can't edit what you turn into a PDF (still need Acrobat for that) but if you get it right in Word, you don't need to - and I have yet to have a corruption error even with a 400+ page document with over 200 figures, pictures and tables.
