Complicity, by Iain without-an-M Banks

Complicity tells the first-person story of a Scottish journalist with a drug habit, who gets involved in a rather bizarre series of murders. Some years ago, he wrote an angry editorial excoriating certain public figures for their unpunished crimes, and now someone is ticking them off his checklist. This story is interleaved with a second-person story of the murderer as you go about your appointed tasks. Since you are violent and sadistic, it's a bit unpleasant to read about your exploits.

Naturally, the two stories intersect, and other episodes in their pasts help to shed more light on the whole thing. Violent and occasionally smutty, the book still has plenty of Banks' wit to relieve the otherwise unrelenting downerness. Less of a stunt than The Wasp Factory, it's also not as good. I'm not sure either is 'enjoyable' in the ordinary sense. Not for your lying-by-the-pool summer reading list.
