So I did go to the Paul Verhoeven booksigning yesterday. I was amazed at how (relatively) well the 405 was moving at 5:30 when I left the office. I didn't think I had a snowball's chance of getting to Santa Monica by 6. But the freeway moved at freeway speeds until it gummed up right about Venice.
The signing was at Every Picture Tells a Story, which is right across the street from the Aero, where Starship Troopers was playing. It's a neat book/artshop, and since I beat Verhoeven there, I browsed about through the art. Lots of original Dr. Seuss drawings and sketches. Sendak, Kirby, Harryhausen...
Verhoeven showed, and there wasn't that big a crowd. I got my book signed and my hand shook. I was at a loss for small talk -- the factoid that sticks in my mind when I think of Verhoeven is his answer when asked what was in the additional material in the unrated version of Basic Instinct: "more licking". I wasn't sure it would be a good idea to suggest that an unrated version of his book on the historical Jesus should also be so descibed.
If traffic was kind on the way there it was a bear on the way back. The stack of cars trying to get on the 10 made me think I could do better on surface streets, but I wound up getting smashed between the 10 and the SM airport much to my slowly moving annoyance. Anyway, I survived the ordeal.
Dr. Pookie appears to have contracted the first crud of the year from the students. Boo. I deduce from her lack of IMing me that either she is too ill to do more than languish in bed, comforted by cat water bottles, or she has decided to tough it out and gone to school.

Smithsonian magazine's Indelible Images feature always has a nifty photograph to discuss. This month, it's like a blast from my past... a towheaded kid in plaid pants on a Big Wheel in a housing tract in the Bay Area in the early 70's. I'd like to think my face looked less murderous than this kid's, but that's really what makes this photo. It's like the ghost of the Wild West. Beautiful.
