Los Angeles Plays Itself will screen at the Aero Theater this weekend: "A must-see for Los Angeles history buffs and cinema enthusiasts, who will marvel at the hundreds of archival and film clips revealing an almost secret history of the City of Angels!"

And more ominously: "See it now on the big screen. It will never be on DVD!"

The director will be there for the Sunday screening.

Speaking of documentaries, we saw the hilarious yet moving Pressure Cooker last night. A tough culinary arts teacher in Philly gets her kids ready for a cooking competition with huge scholarships to CIA or Monroe Culinary as the prizes. You won't learn much about cooking, except possibly some tips on how to wastefully carve a potato using la technique tournage. But still some time well spent with interesting people.

It fits in well with other school-oriented documentaries: Spellbound, The Hobart Shakespeareans, and the milder but very satisfying To Be and To Have. What others are out there, groupmind?
And now for something completely different - art made out of carparts )
