Out of the mouths of public school board members

Hamilton County [near Chattanooga Choo Choo TN] Board of Education member Rhonda Thurman, who represents Soddy-Daisy [High School], said the prayers were part of the school’s tradition, and that anyone who didn’t want to hear could “put their fingers in their ears.

“Everybody is offended by something,” she said. “I’m offended by a lot of those little girls running around with their thong panties showing, but I can’t make that go away.”

Interesting to see the apparent bias from the writer of the article. Not only is the group representing the students carefully and repeatedly identified as "In Wisconsin", but the most inflamatory remarks are attributed to their spokespeople.

I'm afraid it's all too common. These locales ignore Supreme Court rulings about creationism or prayer or equality, and just continue along with their quaint 'traditions'. And then it's all the fault of outsiders when finally some light is shone on them.
'We didn't have any trouble with our black folk until those darn Freedom Riders came down here from up North, stirring shit up.'

The sad fact is, in your pull quote -- Ms. Thurman (in conjunction with the rest of her BoE, I presume) darned well *could* make girls having their thongs showing go away. Schools are allowed to set and enforce dress-code standards. Because *that* isn't something protected by the First Amendment. *Unlike* the ability to not have one's school trying to establish a religion for you. Argh.

Wait, is the separation of church and state in the First Amendment? ;-)
