For all that I actually approve of a candidate who is able to be a bit self-deprecatingly silly (which is what I understand was going on here), these pictures are pretty amusing.
I've seen this picture so many times today that I'm starting to feel bad for the guy. I'd probably make a similarly silly face if I'd done something goofy like nearly walk off the stage.
I think, having read 8 gazillion opinions on this, that the conventional wisdom is "self-deprecating humor, let's not try to pin our disgust at McCain on this." He was goofing, having walked the wrong way. Yes? Yes. Let's let it go. It's not important.
Aside from the grab-ass thing (which is low, unrefined humor; I laughed like a hyena), the other thing I like about this photo is it reminds me of those drawings showing human evolution... the ones that start with a fish or whatever, progress through the hunched and drooling caveman, and onward to the upright, sophisticated modern man. In this photo you have to read from right to left, but I'm OK with doing that.
