Barbara Bush always had a critical failing as a Republican: empathy.

(The reading campaign after Mrs Reagan's Just Say No felt so sensible at the same time that it was a delight came as a surprise to me. To say nothing of her husband backing off of limits on abortion - a move, I've heard, came at her behest.)

I wish she would speak up more, but it doesn't seem to be her thing.
