The new Oldsmobiles are in early this year

Illinois officials announced plans to demolish a suburban Chicago mall that served as a set for a famous scene in the 1980 film "The Blues Brothers."

The mall, which has been vacant for more than 30 years...

Ow.

My recollection is that it was the very fact that it was already vacant which let them do their mayhem with it. I'm surprised it's still there, actually.

Yeah, I knew it was vacant at the time. The making-of material on the DVD has a nice section on that, and how they got the retailers to basically donate product to stock the shelves and let them smash into it. But for it to still be a horrible ghost mall 30 years later?

Clearly the properly respectful way to execute the demolition of this civic landmark is to turn loose a bunch of stunt drivers behind the wheels of vehicles purchased by the government under the Cash For Clunkers program inside the mall.

Respectful and sensible. I approve.
