Cell phones don't cause brain cancer directly. The stress created by having people be able to reach you all the time is more likely to cause problems like that. Though in today's culture NOT being reachable all the time might be a greater source of stress for some.
If this theory (which is as good as any of the ones for how cell phones with their <2W transmitters, most are under 500mw by a good bit) is true then the ubiquitous bluetooth headset (said to be safer because it uses a tranciever several orders of magnitude weaker) may be more dangerous, especially if you leave it in/on all the time.
